Active Ingredients: Apomorphine Hydrochloride
Typical Brand Names: Uprima
What Is It Used For?
UPRIMA is the first clinically tested and medically approved oral
treatment used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which
works in the brain making UPRIMA totally different from any other
treatment.
How Is It Used?
The UPRIMA sublingual tablet is generally prescribed to be taken
20 minutes prior to sexual activity. The medication gives best
when taken after drinking a small glass of water. After drinking
the water, place the tablet under the tongue. Do not chew, just
let the tablet dissolve. In the majority of patients, the tablet
will be dissolved within 10 minutes. An erection should occur
when sexual activity starts. Do not take the medication without
seeking your health care professionals' advice.
Are There Possible Side Effects?
Some of the common side effects of Uprima are nausea, dizziness
and headache, which are generally mild and momentary in nature.
Consult your doctor if any such problem bothers you.
Is It Safe?
UPRIMA is the first clinically tested and medically approved oral
treatment for erectile dysfunction. Unlike other oral treatments
for erectile dysfunction, UPRIMA stimulates dopamine receptors
in the brain.
These receptors in turn transmit excitatory signals down the spinal
cord to the sacral parasympathetic nucleus, stimulating activity
of the sacral nerves supplying the penis. As the penile smooth
muscle relaxes, the pelvic arteries dilate. The dilated arteries
then fill with blood and the penis becomes erect.
What About Interactions With Other Drugs?
Uprima should not be taken by patients taking nitrates. Uprima
should not be given in combination with other centrally-acting
dopamine agonists or antagonists because of the potential for
pharmacodynamic interactions.
No formal drug interaction studies have been performed with other
agents for erectile dysfunction, antidepressants, anticonvulsants
or other CNS-active agents, however clinical experience has not
indicated the presence of interactions. Interaction studies in
volunteers where alcohol was given with Uprima indicated that
concurrent alcohol intake may cause an increase in the incidence
and extent of hypotension.
What If I Miss A Dose?
Uprima is not a medication that is taken on a regular schedule.
If you miss a dose you simply do not experience the beneficial
factors associated with Uprima.
How Should It Be Stored?
Store Uprima away from direct light and heat. Store in a dry location;
avoid storing it in the bathroom, near sinks, or other areas where
it may become damp. Does not use after the expiration date. Keep
Uprima away from children; both when storing it, and when discarding
any unused medication.
Anything Else I Should Know?
Uprima is not advised for patients suffering from severe unstable
angina, recent myocardial infarction, severe heart failure or
any other condition where sexual activity is inadvisable.
UPRIMA should be used with caution in patients taking anti-hypertensive
or nitrate medications.
Your health and well being is our primary concern and we would
therefore strongly suggest that if you are in any doubt whatsoever
in the use of UPRIMA, you must contact your own doctor for further
advice.
