What Is It Used For?
Prilosec is used to treat various stomach or esophagus problems
related to excess stomach acid (e.g., GERD, certain types of ulcers,
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, H pylori).
How Is It Used?
This medication works best if taken before eating. Antacids may
be taken with this medication. The capsules are sustained-released
and must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them or the
long action may be destroyed and the chance of side effects increased.
Are There Possible Side Effects?
This medication may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache,
nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache, or dizziness the first
few days as your body adjusts to it. If these effects persist
or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Unlikely but tell your
doctor if you develop back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances,
cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine or
vision changes. This medication may rarely cause loss of hair,
ringing in the ears, swelling of the stomach or fatigue. In the
unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek
immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction
include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing.

or pharmacist.
Is It Safe?
Before taking Prilosec, tell your doctor of any over-the-counter
or prescription medications you are taking especially diazepam
(Valium), warfarin (Coumadin), phenytoin (Dilantin), ketoconazole,
ampicillin, and iron. Do not start or stop any medication without
doctor or pharmacist approval. This drug may cause an allergic
reaction in patients with a history of sensitivity to the following:
Omeprazole/Lansoprazole.
What About Interactions With Other Drugs?
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication
you may use, especially: diazepam, "blood thinners"
(e.g., warfarin), hydantoins (e.g., phenytoin), azole antifungals
(e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), ampicillin, iron supplements,
sucralfate, cilostazol. Do not start or stop any medicine without
doctor or pharmacist approval.
What If I Miss A Dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near
the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your
usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
How Should It Be Stored?
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30
degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep this and all medications
out of the reach of children.
Anything Else I Should Know?
Prilosec decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Prilosec is used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease
(GERD or heartburn), and other conditions involving excessive
stomach acid production.
