What Is It Used For?
Tolterodine is used to relieve urinary difficulties, including
frequent urination and inability to control urination. Tolterodine
is in a class of medications called antimuscarinics. It works
by preventing bladder contraction.
How Is It Used?
Tolterodine comes as a tablet and an extended-release (long-acting)
capsule to take by mouth. The tablet is usually taken twice a
day. The extended-release capsule is usually taken once a day
with liquids. Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part
you do not understand. Take tolterodine exactly as directed. Do
not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed
by your doctor.
Are There Possible Side Effects?
Serious side effects from Detrol La are unlikely to occur; however
an allergic reaction an (difficulty breathing; closing of your
throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives), stop
taking tolterodine and seek emergency medical attention
Other less serious side effects dry mouth, dryness of the eyes,
blurred vision or large pupils, upset stomach, constipation, difficulty
urinating, drowsiness, or dizziness.
Is It Safe?
Tolterodine is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that
it is not known whether tolterodine will be harmful to an unborn
baby. Do not take tolterodine without first talking to your doctor
if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
What About Interactions With Other Drugs?
Tolterodine may increase the effects of other drugs that cause
drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines,
sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, anxiety medicines,
and muscle relaxants. Tell your doctor about all medicines that
you are taking, and do not take any medicine unless your doctor
approves them.
What If I Miss A Dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it but skip it in
case it is the time to take the next dose. Take the next scheduled
dose in such a situation.
How Should It Be Stored?
Detrol La should be stored at a room temperature (between 59°F
and 86°F) away from moisture. Keep the medication out of children's
reach.
Anything Else I Should Know?
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other
hazardous activities. Tolterodine may cause dizziness, drowsiness,
or blurred vision. If you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or
blurred vision, avoids these activities. Avoid becoming overheated
in hot weather. Tolterodine may increase the risk of heat stroke
because it may decrease sweating. Drink plenty of fluid of maintain
adequate hydration.
